St Michael’s is a community of prayer, compassion, and justice. The church is a founding parish of the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey. No wonder, we got our charter in 1703, when the first Anglican church was being built in New Jersey’s capital, Burlington. Not only that, but we were the site where the Episcopal Protestant Church of America ratified its Articles of Religion in 1801 [see History].
In the early days of the American church there weren’t enough ministers to go around, so each Sunday they traveled from church to church on horseback. It is the same today but they travel in cars. So while we celebrate the Holy Eucharist every first and third Sunday of the month at 11:15 am, on alternate weeks the entire congregation takes part, holding traditional Morning Services ourselves. We worship according to the traditions of the Episcopal Church. We use the Book of Common Prayer and sing hymns from The Hymnal 1982 and Lift Every Voice and Sing II.
A COMMUNITY HUB & CROSSROADS PARISH
St. Michael’s is actively re-imagining its role as an urban ministry. We share our worship space with other faith traditions, and keep up with the prayers posted on its Prayer Wall at the downtown corner of N.Warren and Perry Streets. Our bookstore for mental and spiritual health, 12-Steps & More Books, gives out free books and recovery pamphlets to anyone on the street. The summer camp, run by Trenton United Family Foundation, fills the Parish House and yard with Trenton’s kids every weekday during July and August.
